2 QB Offense

2 QB Offense

1926, Benjamin ˇ°Benny Friedman throws his last forward pass at the University of Michigan after leading it to 3 near perfect seasons, after inventing the forward pass. It is considered useless by professional teams for the next 30 years. Early 1970's, Bill Walsh joins the 49'ers and creates the West Coast Offense, the most current offensive formation created by a professional team (that's what I call progress). He leads the 49'ers with Joe Montana and Steve Young, both Hall of Fame Quarterbacks, to 3 Lombardi Trophies. Fast forward to the current, and you have brilliant minds, Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, Tom Coughlin and Wade Phillips. You also have vibrant and exciting play callers, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and Tony Romo, all using the West Coast offense as a primary weapon. Could all of this be changing soon?

In the 2008 season, the Miami Dolphins started to use the Wildcat offense, an offense called ˇ°disrespectful by former Tampa Bay Bucs Defensive Linemen Warren Sapp, as a primary tool. That change in play calling, and also getting Chad Pennington as a starting QB, gave the Dolphins a boost from their 1-15 record in the 2007 season, to a respectful record of 10-5, as of now. Go about three thousand miles North-West, and you find Piedmont High, an Oakland-Area high school. Here, a struggling team went from a smal
l, substandard football team, to a conference power house. How, you might ask?

Kurt Bryan and Steve Humphries found a glitch in their rule book. It stated that if the player receiving the snap was 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage, any player with the number of 1-48, or 80-89 was an eligible receiver. Using this rule, they set out to create an offense never before seen.

This legit offense had 2 Quarterbacks and 9 wide-outs. Any of the wide-outs could become linemen at any time, and linemen could become wide receivers at any time as well. In the past year, thousands of high schools across the nation have adopted this offense, but, as this offense comes usual, the defenses will usually catch on, as they always have. Now, I don't want to make you believe on Sunday, you might be seeing Jeff Saturday going out for a pass, because this offense won't be in the NFL for quite a long time. But, variations are popping up. In fact, they already have, look at the tight end. It's a hybrid linemen who can catch a ball, or block. As the tackle moves apart from the line, it is possible for the rules to change, and the tackle could become a huge 300 pound receiver in the flats. For that to happen, the ˇ°Roughing the Passer rule will have to be modified, because the tackle will not be blocking. Well, no A-11 on Sunday.

What a shame, but, hey there's always the Wildcat. Anyone else think Ronnie Brown could be a Quarterback, or is it just me?
