Deer Hunting Tips Worth Trying

  By AI Editor

Going deer hunting? You may want to try some tricks and tips to make your hunting a more thrilling and rewarding experience.

For one, try wearing different camouflage patterns for both your shirts and pants. This allows the deer maximum breakup. Also, wear rubber boots to minimize ground scent. Deer have a keen sense of smell so this trick can keep them from being able to detect your presence.

Consider using scents to attract deer to you. For instance, if you are hunting in a cornfield, try using a corn scent. Use an apple scent when hunting in an area where there are predominantly apple trees as well. Corn and apple are some of deer’s choice foods and they are also lured by their scents too. Try this during preseason when the deer are stocking up on food for the winter season.

Moreover, a great place for hunting deer is in areas where there is presence of salt and other natural minerals seeping from underground springs. Deer normally love salt and will usually change their travel patterns in order to incorporate salt into their diets. However, if you can’t find areas with natural mineral licks, you may want to make your own. To do this, you will need about fifty pounds of rock salt. Then dump it in a spot that you can easily access but can be discreet enough so as not to scare the deer. The deer should be finding its new lick and will then set up a nearby shop.  An excellent time to apply this salt technique is during early to mid-summer.

Stalking whitetail deer can be especially tricky since you have to move at a slow and quiet pace. The best time to move is when the deer is distracted or feeding. If the deer happens to raise its head, stop and stay still. Move up closer once it lowers its head. It takes a lot of patience if you want to successfully accomplish your goal.

If you want to bring deer into shooting radius as nearly as possible, then try using the grunt call. While you are on your stand, use this device every fifteen to twenty minutes. When used, a deer can be an earshot from your call even if it may be a mile away from you. Moreover, the grunt call can also be used even without first seeing the deer.

You can also try making low deer grunts or whistling softly if you want to stop a deer.  Try this when the deer walks too fast for a safe tree stand bowshot. Carefully draw and shoot the deer once it stops to look around. There are several ways to put a deer down, but you may want to shoot behind the shoulder through the ribs. This technique makes a good shot.

Avoid shouting or making loud, unnecessary noises when following a recent kill trail. You can never tell whether the deer is really dead and if it were still alive, the noise may alert the deer and cause it to run off.

If you are pursuing an aging deer or would like to know whether it is older than 1 ½ years old, you can try this reliable trick by locating the deer’s third pre-molar, which is the third tooth to the back from the front. The deer is 1 ½ years or younger if the said tooth has three cusps. The deer is older if it only has two cusps.

Rules and regulations on deer hunting may vary from one state to another. These may cover specific parameters on the use of arms and ammunitions during general statewide seasons, archery and muzzloader seasons and may also include other special regulations as well.
