My First Live Boxing Match
The Antonio Escalante vs Cornelius Lock fight in El Paso, Texas was my first ever live Boxing match. I have watched tons and tons of Boxing matches on the Television, but watching a live Boxing match in person was just a great experience. All seven of the fights at the Don Haskins Center were all great in their own way.
The first fight on the card was Robert Luna Jr. and Tomondre King. Both were Texas fighters and it was a nice solid way to start off the night. Luna Jr. upped his record to 5-0 with 3 KO's as he stopped King who fell to 4-16-5. Luna Jr. showed very good Boxing skills and nice power as he was able to catch King a couple of times in the fight. He ended up stopping him in the 4th and final round.
The second fight on the card got the almost full Don Haskins Center up and yelling as young Cesar Valenzuela from El Paso, Texas was taking on Miguel Buendia who was making his debut. Both fighters traded haymakers throughout the fight and Cesar Valenzuela had the edge with his hometown crowd behind him. He ended up winning on a UD improving his record to 2-0. It was a tough fight for Buendia making his debut in front of a hostile crowd who was booing him throughout the fight. He did have his moments catching Valenzuela a couple of times while taking blows as well.
The first fight on ESPN's Friday Night Fights was a tad bit disappointing because of Juan Nazario's gameplan of holding and hitting behind the head of his opponent, hot young prospect, Carlos Ivan Velasquez. Velasquez did what he could stay on the outside and tag his opponent all night long. In the second round he caught Nazario with a big right hand that appeared to have knocked him down, but the ref did not call it a knockdown. CIV dominated the fight and improved to 11-0 with a clear UD.
CIV's brother Juan Carlos Velasquez was scheduled to fight Jose Angel Beranza and the fight was a little bit more entertaining than the last fight. JCV looked good for the first two rounds, but then all of a sudden the wheels fell of in the third and he got KD. In attenpt to show that he wasn't hurt he ran right into the face of Beranza and he got put back on the canvas. From there on Beranza looked good and he pretty much won every round from then on.
Then it was time for the Main Event of the evening. It was a great great fight Antonio Escalante got himself tons of new fans, me included. There was great energy great buzz just a fantastic fight. Tony looked very good, great head movement great body work just a great night for Tony and I can't wait for his next fight. Lock showed heart in there I thought he would get stopped a couple of times during the fight, but he was able to stay in there. He deserves some props as well. Escalante won by UD and dominated the whole way with his hometown crowd right there with him.
ESPN's Friday Night Fights was off air, but there was still two more fights to go. The first one was Abraham Hun and Brian Soto. There was still a decent amount of people in the crowd, but the one's who did stay got a good show from Hun. Hun put his man down once in the first with a good looking one-two combo. In the 2nd he stuck to his guns and waited for his moment and when he did he threw out the one-two again and Soto was knocked out cold. He layed on the canvas for a good 10 minutes. Abraham is going to be somebody to watch out for in the Middleweight division he is still very young and now 5-0 with 4 KO's, but I have a feeling we will be hearing his name in about two or three years from now. The final fight of the night was Saul Morales and Guadalupe De Leon. With a good portion of the crowd still there they cheered on the El Paso favorite Morales and ended up with the win. All of the El Paso fighters won and the crowd went home happy.
All in all, it was a fantastic night for me, El Paso, and Boxing. I will be looking forward to watching tons and tons of more Boxing on the T.V as usual, but watching it live whoo boy you can't beat it! I will without a doubt do it again hopefully within the next year. Boxing is the best sport in the World!
