Racquetball - A Sport for Mind and Body

Racquetball was invented in Greenwich in 1950 by Joe Sobek, a professional handball and tennis player, who introduced a stringed racquet for better control and velocity and named the game as Paddle Rackets. The sport gained prominence through consistent efforts and promotion by National Paddle Rackets Association founded in 1952 by Sobek. The major reason for the wide spread popularity of the sport was that there was no need for a separate court or playing area as the already existing numerous handball courts served this purpose. The name Racquetball was coined by another tennis player Bob McInerney in 1969 and International Racquetball Association was born.

A racquetball court is a 40*20*20 feet fully enclosed rectangle. The game is played with a racquet about 22 inches long and 2.25 inch rubber ball. Racquetball eye guards are also recommended to avoid any injury to the eyes. The game could invo
lve two, three or four players. A two player game is called Singles and a four player game is called Doubles. In a Singles game two players are competing against each other and in a doubles game, two pairs compete against one another for victory. Amongst other championships, US Open is the most popular and prestigious event held annually.

Racquetball is an extremely fine sport which lays emphasis on a player's timing, ability, efficiency and strategizing skills. The sport is easy to learn and is hence equally popular among players of all age groups. Racquetball clubs are established in high schools to encourage and motivate young children who participate in this sport. The popularity and widespread acceptance of this sport can be judged from the fact that children who do not have means to access Racquetball courts are found playing the game in their neighborhood playgrounds. It is also an excellent aerobic exercise for the entire body.
