SPORTMANSHIP
Sportsmanship as a whole conveys a good message about being a fair and generous person. The Australian tour to India and the Indian tour to Australia lacked a lot of those qualities. Even Ricky Ponting, the Australian Captain admitted that Indians are a threat to their side.
It all started when Australia toured India last year. A very good match was on the run, when suddenly a bad patch of the Indian side changed the game. Andrew Symonds, the aggressive Australian batsman (much known as the Terminator) was fielding on mid off position on the ground. All was well till the crowds where silent. But as they knew that their team was losing, they teased the Australians; few started the monkey chants particularly posing it to Symonds. Of course it was a pity situation on our side. Then the media and the rivals took on the racism issue. So it was a total dilemma. Slowly the situation came down and it was calm. But it wasn't over probably the Australians didn't consider it as DONE.
The second situation was when Indians toured the Australian soil, it was a total warfare. It all went well till the 2nd test match. But then there was a slight misunderstanding between the players, especially between Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds. There was no rest until the end of the test matches Played. The Aussies where somehow trying to make Harbhajan quit. The hearing was on the run, we were fighting against the charge of 'bhajji' (Harbhajan Singh) teasing him with monkey chant while the Aussies were fighting for the charge. Finally there came the presence by the board members especially by the President
Sharad Pawar. Malcom Speed the chairperson of ICC finally told the verdict that he was safe. Now certainly the opposition was on its edge. The Australians really wanted to draw first blood.
The third part was the most Crucifying. Cricket as it is usually referred as the GENTLE MEN'S game was certainly not in the best of its critics. Again Harbhajan was the man who was targeted. The Australian Dasher and Smashing Opener Matthew Hayden called bhajji "Obnoxious Weed". The sad part of the story is there was still no silence. Everything was waivery and nothing was stable. Even though there was a lot of story shown outside there was a different story inside.
As these things crop up in International cricket, it is a sad statement of ironic indiscipline but as far as the game is concerned many are happy to see them but many are disturbed. Even recently when Harbhajan slapped Sreesanth a bad patch of the game was shown out by the Cricketers especially it hurted the Indian crowds a lot because it was their team that faced the shame.
These things are just synopsis of what happened, so actually the situation is very bad. And even as the Media is very good in jeopardizing the problems a weak link to the future game is being shown out. A recent study in the Times of India shows that 79% of the people think that the Standard of the game has gone low. Sportsmanship which was considered as a very good prospectus in the minds of the players in the times of Viv. Richards and Sunil Gavaskar is certainly not part of the players in the recent times. Players shouldn't be given a lot of leniency since they tend to get carried away with that. Of course someone should tell them that everything is permissible but everything is not profitable.
