Wrestling is indeed a
dangerous sport, even when it is just for entertainment purposes. Here are some
examples of such tragedies. There has been a lot of speculation regarding the possibility of theatrics in the WWE, or the World Wrestling Entertainment. You may have heard a lot of legends regarding such, with focus on how the wrestlers are trained to fall and attack accordingly, for the main purpose of entertaining their fans. Indeed, a lot of people find this true, to some extent, simply because there is just much showmanship when it comes to the matches these wrestlers have against each other. Of course, this is something that a lot of WWE fans enjoy, so there really is no stopping such theatrics and showmanship.
However, there are indeed risks entailed in the sport. Bodies go get bruised. Bones do get broken. A lot of WWE wrestlers have been in and out of hospitals due to injuries during the matches. Worse, there have also been a lot of deaths in this portion of the world of wrestling.
The recent tragedy that struck WWE was the death of Chris Benoit. On June 25 of just this year 2007, tragedy struck when the bodies of World Heavyweight Champion Chris Benoit, his wife, and his 7-year old were discovered inside their very own house. After much investigation, the case has been determined as a double murder-suicide.
When people came to hear of this, a lot of different opinions and views were raised, particularly on the use of steroids in wrestling. A lot of Chris Benoit fans did not want to believe that their idol was taking steroids, which led him to commit this heinous crime. But then again, the preliminary investigation showed that there were indeed steroids inside the Benoit household. The family physician was even question regarding the prescription for steroids he had given Benoit. Dr. Phil Asten reasoned that he had prescribed Chris steroids because the wrestler did not have enough levels of testosterone. In fact, his testosterone levels were at an all-time low. Dr. Asten asserted that these low levels of testosterone were caused by the wrestler’s abuse of the substance in the past. Furthermore, Dr. Asten claimed that he had seen Chris Benoit on the Friday before the double murder-suicide took place. He claimed he did not see any signs of rage in the wrestler, so he really did not see any need to worry at the time. Nonetheless, the doctor’s clinic was raided for purposes of investigation. This is because Dr. Astin’s name was on the lot of prescription bottles found everywhere in the Benoit household.
There have also been speculations about family problems being the possible source of rage that provoked Benoit to commit this heinous crime. An interesting fact to know here is that the murdered son, Daniel, had suffered from Fragile X Syndrome or FXS, which is the most common form of genetic mental impairment. People diagnosed with this syndrome actually have learning and intellectual disabilities. In fact, FXS is the common cause of autistic behaviors.
Because this medical condition presented quite a challenge for the family, Chris and his wife, Nancy, had a difficult time with each other. Their close friends can even attest to the fact that there had indeed been a strain in their marriage.
There are indeed so many speculations and viewpoints being shared about Chris Benoit’s plight in wrestling. Steroids, family problems, and such are just the common opinions people have. Whatever the reason behind this illogical crime may be, the management and staff of the WWE should do something to thwart such negative activities in their circuit. There have been just too many wrestling tragedies already, which include the deaths of the wrestlers in the Von Erich family, Magnum T.A., Andre the Giant, Brian Pillman, Owen Hart, Eddie Guerrero, and Chris Benoit himself. These many deaths is a clear indication that change is indeed necessary.
